Where do you want to fly?

To the editor:

In 2017, the paper reported about the Hagerstown and Washington County fire departments and their aid.

In the last year, 2018, using the newspaper listings, I found 433 times when the city fire department assisted county fire companies.

The county residents get this aid without paying any city taxes.

Since the paper does not post county fire calls, I cannot say how often they assist the city.

City homeowners pay county taxes, so they contribute to county fire companies.

This also holds true for police. Since we pay both city and county taxes, we pay for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Yet county homeowners pay nothing to the city, but get the service.

I believe it’s time this county goes to a countywide form of government. This would make taxes fair for all.

The city and county could help their fire departments if they would pass a measure to start charging for medical emergencies.

This past year, the city ran on 1,265 medical emergencies. Each time one of these calls goes out, a fire engine is out of service and another department has to cover since the fire department is being used as a medical unit. They should be able to recover their expenses.

I, a city homeowner, for one, am tired of paying for those who pay no property tax.

It’s time the city and county get their acts together and do something for us homeowners.
