A Hagerstown man reported missing last week was killed and his body was found in a wooded area in Berkeley County, W.Va., according to police.
The body of Christopher Turner, 27, was found Wednesday off Buck Hill Road in southwestern Berkeley County, W.Va., according to Hagerstown police and Berkeley County Sheriff Curtis Keller.
Hagerstown police said in a press release that Turner’s family last heard from him on Jan. 20. His vehicle was found in Hagerstown’s west end on Jan. 24.
Keller said a resident of the Round Top Estates subdivision near Gerrardstown, W.Va., found Turner’s body in the vicinity of a culvert in a ravine area.
“The manner and condition in which the body was found indicates murder,” a Hagerstown police news release states.
Berkeley County deputies responded to the area to investigate at about noon after receiving a call about the resident’s discovery.
They determined that the body might be linked to a reported disappearance in Hagerstown, Keller said.
He said deputies turned over information about the body to Hagerstown police. Hagerstown police investigators went to Berkeley County and positively identified Turner.
“We will assist them if they need us,” Keller said.
Turner’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Charleston, W.Va., for an autopsy. The family was immediately notified.
Nothing will be finalized until an autopsy is completed, but Keller said it appears the homicide did not occur in Berkeley County.
When asked about the manner of death and where the body was found, Officer Heather Aleshire, a spokeswoman for Hagerstown police, said investigators were not going to issue anything more than what was in a press release.
“The Hagerstown City Police Department extends its condolences to the family of Christopher Turner,” the release states. “The police department is dedicated to bringing justice to those responsible for his death and we will continue to work diligently until those responsible are charged.”
