Hagerstown, Md. (September 14, 2015) – Governor Larry Hogan has declared September 2015 General Aviation and Community Airport Month. This announcement recognizes the value and importance of the airport transportation system in Maryland.
The recent Maryland Aviation Administration impact study outlined how important regional airports are to the local economy. The study concluded Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) annually generates $108.9 million in business revenue and collected $8.4 million in state and local taxes.
Airside Service
HGR is home to more than 14 aviation-related businesses. These fixed base operators provide numerous services including aircraft rental, heated hangars, computerized weather, aircraft inspections and aircraft maintenance and repair. The flight school conducts discovery flights, pilot ground school and flight training.
Since 2008, businesses supporting the aero defense industry have landed at HGR bringing with it multi-million dollar defense contract awards. The growth in aero defense spawned local economic development, allowing government officials to bring the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) education program for FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technicians to the airport in 2011.
Upcoming Events
HGR hosts numerous events throughout the year such as Open Airplane Afternoons. Be sure to stop by the Wings & Wheels Expo on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The expo will feature antique cars and trucks, motorcycles, fire trucks and various aircraft. A new attraction this year will be the drag racing Cessna Spirit of Lemons.
Take a tour through Washington County’s aviation history. Kids and adults alike can climb aboard 12 Hagerstown-built aircraft including the Fairchild C-82 and C-119 Flying Boxcar. Other aviation artifacts on site include the 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31 biplane, 1943 Fairchild PT-19 WWII Trainer and Fairchild 24, all built in Hagerstown.
Rides will be offered in various aircraft. Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 36 (EAA) will offer free airplane rides for youth ages 8 to 17 through their Young Eagles Program. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
