Senate approves measure to reauthorize funding at Hagerstown Regional Airport

A recently expired federal program that funded Hagerstown Regional Airport's passenger service would be reauthorized for another year under a bill passed Tuesday night by the U.S. Senate.

The Senate has unanimously passed bipartisan legislation co-sponsored U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD), to ensure that the Essential Air Service (EAS) program continues in Hagerstown until Congress passes the five-year reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Passage of the FAA reauthorization bill, which contains a provision to continue the EAS mileage waiver program, could be delayed until 2008.

The EAS funding would have to be extended after Nov. 15.

A rare FLYING PT-19 aircraft is flying to Hagerstown, and is being donated to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. The PT-19 was manufactured in Hagerstown by the Fairchild company starting in 1939 and through the very early 1940's.

The air crew of a Minnesota Air National Guard C-130 visited Hagerstown-Washington County on a training flight. The crew had experienced engine difficulties, and was stranded in Hagerstown for more than a week, as various repairs were made.
Hagerstown Airport Receives Next-Generation Security Scanner

Hagerstown Regional Airport is among the first airports in the country to receive a Reveal Explosive Detection System (EDS) for checked baggage screening. The Reveal CT-80 machine, which is smaller in size and costs less than half the other EDS machines currently in use at commercial airports nationwide, will augment the other forms of explosives detection equipment already in place at Hagerstown.

Among other recipients, Hagerstown Aviation Services Inc. of Hagerstown, MD was presented with the Avionics Training Excellence Award from the Aircraft Electronics Association during the Opening Ceremony of the 49th annual AEA International Convention & Trade Show. The Avionics Training Excellence award recognizes AEA members for their total commitment to training as evidenced by participation in AEA–approved training. This year, 64 members were recognized, which is the most ever.

Sarbanes that the U.S. Department of Transportation Order for commercial passenger service at Hagerstown was signed. MESA/Air Midwest (operating as U.S Airways Express) to provide three round trips a day from Hagerstown to Pittsburgh International Airport in Pennsylvania through September 2007.

Planning is well underway for the community event, "Fairchild Airplanes & the People Who Built Them," scheduled for Saturday, September 18, from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at the Hagerstown Airport. The event, which features a display of vintage Fairchild airplanes and memorabilia, will also host an A-10 pilots reunion.

US Airways Express has announced that wholly owned carrier Piedmont Airlines will begin serving Hagerstown Regional Airport on Sunday, May 2, 2004. Piedmont will be upgrading capacity and frequency between Hagerstown and Pittsburgh, utilizing the 37-seat, deHavilland Dash-8 aircraft on four daily roundtrip flights.
Construction to begin on Runway Program at Hagerstown Regional Airport; Local Contractor Lands Bid for Package One

The Board of County Commissioners of Washington County Maryland announced today that C. William Hetzer, Inc. of Hagerstown Maryland is the successful bidder of the first of four packages that comprise Hagerstown Regional Airport’s Runway Improvement Program. Hetzer’s bid was $17,429,655, which was $600,000 lower than the engineer’s estimate. Work is expected to begin within 45 days.
